Our jewelry is handmade with 18k gold. You can choose between yellow, rose, or white gold. But what exactly does it all mean? Here are some frequently asked questions and facts you should know about gold.
1. What does 18k gold mean?
The term "karat" is used to measure the purity of gold. The higher the karat, the closer the gold is to being pure. 18k gold is an alloy made up of 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, resulting in a gold that's 75% pure. Why not 100% you might ask? 24k gold aka pure gold is too soft to be used in jewelry making. It would scratch and dent easily and wouldn't last long. You’ll find 24k gold used in restoration of historical churches or interiors for example.
2. What is the difference between Yellow, Rosé or White gold?
Gold is a naturally yellow metal, but it can be made into various colors by combining it with other metals.
To create white gold, for example, gold is mixed with white metals such as manganese or palladium. The resulting alloy has a white color and is often used to make jewelry.
Rose gold, also known as pink gold or red gold, is created by mixing gold with copper. The proportion of copper used determines the shade of pink or red that is achieved. Rose gold is a popular choice for jewelry and has a warm, romantic look.
Yellow gold is the natural color of pure gold and is achieved by not mixing it with any other coloured metals. It is a classic choice for jewelry and has a warm, rich appearance.
In summary, the color of gold can be changed by mixing it with different metals, with the proportion of the metals used determining the final color of the alloy.
3. Is it appropriate to mix different colors gold?
Some people believe that you shouldn't mix and match different colors of gold. However, in our opinion, you can mix and match whatever colors, gemstones, and styles you like. Just wear whatever makes you happy!
4. Can I shower with my Jewelry?
18k gold jewelry is durable enough for everyday use, including showering. Just remember to rinse your jewelry with clear water after swimming in a pool or the sea, as salt and chlorine can damage it over time.
